A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the odds had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
