At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
